Asali Suite (only 1 room)
A honeymooners or romantics paradise. You have your own private beach which is right outside your spacious room. The rooms are enormous with their own living area.In your own private deck, you have a plunge pool from where you can enjoy the millions of evening stars. Your own private chef can come and cook your meal of choice while you enjoy the Indian Ocean breeze.
Shamba Suite (only 5 rooms)
Your own large suite with the beach walking distance away. Shamba suites offer a funky and unique decoration.
There is an upstairs deck where there is a bed for sleeping in the open air although it is under a roof and protected from the elements.
The brand new Matemwe Retreat is located on an amazing stretch of private land, just north of Matemwe's main lodge and right opposite the Mnemba Atoll. The Retreat consists of 3 fabulous, separate villas, full of atmosphere, inspiration and personal touches. Each ground floor of each villa (150 m2 including verandahs) features a private cocktail bar, an air-conditioned bedroom, a bathroom with double basins, shower, and large romantic bathtub overlooking the Indian Ocean. The best part of each villa is the plunge pool on the private roof terrace (60 m2), complete with sun and shade decks. And if this is not enough to make you want to stay there right now - each villa has its own small beach right in front of it.
The service in the Retreat is our pride: breakfast served on the private veranda of your room, so as not to disturb you. Each day the manager or chef will stop by to discuss lunch and dinner preferences: the catch of the day served in the privacy of your garden or roof terrace or a dinner at Matemwe's main lodge, where you can enjoy the company of other guests. Drinks are served in the room or on the beach and you can have massages and beauty treatments in the comfort of your roof terrace, overlooking the Indian Ocean.
The Retreat is built by local craftsmen, and where possible from local materials. Walls are of local stone and roofs are made of makuti (woven palm leaves). Most of the furniture is made from locally produced coconut wood. Soft furnishings are produced by Zanzibari women and the matting by the blind association in Stone Town. The sun, through our solar system, supplies hot water to the lodge. Materials from outside Zanzibar have only been used if we cannot get it locally or the quality is not good enough. Over 60% of the staff in the lodge are from the villages close to Matemwe.
Matemwe located on the North Eastern coast of Zanzibar Island, commands wide views over sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. The recently renovated rooms are positioned to maximize the panoramic sea view and cool island breeze.
Matemwe consists of 12 beautiful suites, built from local materials and surrounded by a lush tropical garden. Each suite has a private veranda with hammocks and couches overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the room, you’ll find a fantastic bed, plenty of space and personal touches. Whilst the turquoise sea calls for you, 2 intimate swimming pools are available to refresh guests during the sunny Zanzibar days. Besides the rooms, the restaurant and the various lounge areas overlook the Indian Ocean and the fresh sea breeze ensures that the climate is pleasant and that the mosquitoes stay away. When staying at Matemwe , ocean trips with snorkeling equipment can be easily arranged for you, and you will enjoy the local reef and discover the little island of Mnemba Atoll- right opposite Matemwe- in a relaxed and informative manner. Matemwe organizes diving trips in co-operation with a professional diving centre to show you the breathtaking underwater world of the Indian Ocean. For the ones who don’t like boats, snorkeling can be done straight from Matemwe’s beach or during reef walks. Kayaks are also available to explore the crystal clear sea.

Only housing a maximum of 20 guests, highest standard of service can be assured. The rooms, hand-woven palm mats shaped into a hut, have shower-bathrooms and a private verandah. There are no windows or doors, but the same palm mats ensures your privacy. The theme is take your shoes off and relax!!
